William Edward "Bill" Suffern, 82, originally from Dunbar, residing in Connellsville, died Saturday, December 25, 2021 at home. He was born April 9, 1939 to the late Donald P. Suffern and the late Mary E. Williams Suffern Clews.
William worked for many years as a fire inspector and had retired from Anchor Hocking Glass. He was a proud member of the Dunbar Wesley United Methodist Church until its closing. While there, he was a Sunday School teacher, church superintendent and church soloist. He began singing as a teenager. He competed on the Wilkens Amateur Hour, winning an award and went on to frequently be asked to share his musical talents at weddings and funerals throughout his lifetime. He also shared his love of singing with others as a member of the Connellsville Community Chorus.
A history buff at heart, he was a member of the Dunbar Historical Society; loved to teach others about both history and genealogy and thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent researching his own family’s past and genealogy.
Surviving are his 2 daughters, Linda McCabe and Alex, Kathleen Nicholson and Walter; 6 grandchildren, Jennifer (Charles) Evans, Jessica (Jeffrey) Stone, Jaymie McCabe, Thomas Nicholson, Kate (Tim) Lehman and Keith Nicholson; 17 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; sister, Mary Jane (Harry) Porterfield, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Ann Groff Suffern and brothers, Donald P. Suffern Jr. and John H. "Jack" Suffern.
Friends will be received at Burhans-Crouse Funeral Home, 28 Connellsville Street, Dunbar, Wednesday, December 29, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., and Thursday, December 30, 9-10 a.m..
Funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Tracey McCabe officiating.
Interment will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Dunbar.
