Maxine J. Gibbs, 96, of Lemont Furnace, PA, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, October 14, 2024.

She was born in Mount Independence, PA, on February 9, 1928, to the late Robert N. Matthews, and the late Bessie I. (Wadsworth) Matthews.

In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Orval R. Gibbs Jr., son, Orval R. Gibbs III; daughter, Joyce M. Maddas; daughter-in-law, Linda Gibbs; grandson, Pete Scarry; stepmother, Tracy Matthews; brothers, Charles R. Matthews and wife Peggy, Thomas O. Gibbs IV, Gretchen Scarry and Russell (Michelle) Gibbs; great-children, Amanda (Craig), Justin, Jessica, and Mason; great-great-grandson, Nolan; brothers, Melvin (Lois) Matthews, and Franklin (Barbara) Matthews as well as many special nieces and nephews.

Maxine was a lifelong member of Cove Run Free Methodist Church, where she enjoyed teaching both CLC and Bible School, as well as choreographing ten years of Christmas programs.

She spent twenty-five years working at Uniontown Auto Auction and over fifty years as a poll worker for North Union #2. Maxine and Orval spent several summers working as campground hosts for Mill Run Campground.

Maxine’s hobbies included sewing, cooking, gardening, and being a part of the community birthday club. But her favorite hobbies were playing the guitar, piano, and fiddle. She also loved to sing and yodel. She had a wonderful sense of humor and quick wit that has created lasting memories for many.

Her proudest and most cherished moments were spending time with her family during birthday parties, picnics, and holidays. She will sadly be missed by those who knew and loved her.
