CAROL JOHNSTON Obituary

Carol Rae “Mama Bear” (Maddas) Johnston, 73, of Dunbar, PA, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2025, in WVU Uniontown Hospital, Uniontown, PA.

She was the last remaining member of her immediate family. 

She was born on December 25, 1951, in Connellsville, PA, to the late Anthony Ernest Maddas and the late Cecelia Marie (Baker) Maddas.

She is a member of St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Dunbar, PA, of which she was very active. In her younger years, she was a member of the church choir during its existence, a lector, a member of the Altar Rosary Society, a volunteer for a multitude of church fundraising efforts, amongst many other church related activities. 

Carol retired from Sensus Technologies, formerly known as Rockwell International, where she proudly worked for forty-two and a half years. 

She was a member of the Daughters of Catholic War Veterans, Casey Girls of the Knights of Columbus, Connellsville, PA, until their dissolution, a former member of the American Legion Post 301, Connellsville, PA, a lifetime member of the Dunbar Historical Society, and a member of the Dunbar Loving Hands Senior Center. 

She is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Randy D. Johnston; children, Dana Johnston and her significant other Wayne Hoak, Troy A. Johnston; loving step-daughter Angela (Jason) Rucker; grandchildren, Shanon (Dennis) Ellererock, Noah Rucker, Skye Hoak, Blake Hoak; niece, Toni Marie (Tim) Kay; three nephews John (Jenny) Maddas Jr., William Maddas Jr. and companion Kerri, James Maddas Jr. and husband Larry; great-nieces and great-nephews; sister-in-law, Audrey Maddas; loving friends that were like family, Kyle Bigley, Robbie Bigley, Cody Bigley and Samantha Elwell; as well as her best friends, Connie Collins, Bertha Ruper, and Betty Dunaway. 

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Norma Jean (Paul) Schomer, William (Ruby) Maddas Sr., John (Nancy) Maddas Sr., James Maddas Sr., as well as her nephews, Paul David Schomer Jr., and Michael Maddas. 

Friends will be received at Burhans-Crouse Funeral Home, 28 Connellsville Street, Dunbar, PA, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday, July 18, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. when prayers of transfer will be said. 

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 459 Ranch Road, Dunbar, PA, at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Peter Guardiano as celebrant. 

Interment to follow at St. Rita’s Cemetery, Connellsville, PA. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Carol’s name to Dunbar Loving Hands Senior Center, 6 2nd Street, Speers Hill, Dunbar, PA 15431, or Dunbar Community Library, 60 Connellsville Street, Dunbar, PA 15431.
